Having spoken to a few Masters, it seemed to me that the general consensus was that the event should have at least two sections. With only one section should a Master play a bad game or two they are paired with A-players and Candidate Masters for much of the rest of the event. A couple told me that this was their last CO as they were tired of getting these sorts of pairings.

It is not the GMs that were complaining about the format, as far as I could tell. It was players who were not happy being paired up or down constantly, or like a yoyo. The Ottawa Chess Club site gives an example of someone who is not a GM, and who was not happy with his pairings, or the pairing system used.

The reason we asked players to fill out a survey at the end of the tournament was precisely to replace this sort of speculation with hard information about what people really preferred. We have not yet tabulated all the responses but I can tell you that when I looked through the pile of forms the support for a single section was overwhelming. We will publish the results when the tally is complete.
